Northwest Africa 12208 (NWA 12208)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2013 Feb

Classification: Ureilite

Physical characteristics: Ovoid, dark-brown stone with weathered fusion crust on one surface. The other surfaces are wind-ablated. Minor caliche and rust on surface. Sample includes polished thin section and billet.

Petrography: Predominantly olivine with significant reduction rims visible. Gypsum was noted in some cracks indicating terrestrial weathering however there is only minor iron staining apparent in the mineral grains. Modal abundances: olivine approx. 70%; graphite approx. 20%; the remainder is scattered low-Ca pyroxene grains.

Geochemistry: Olivine: Fa14.0±4.3 (n=8); Olivine core: Fa16.0±2.6 (n=6); Olivine rim: Fa8.2±1.4 (n=2). Augite: Fs5.5±0.1Wo24.5±0.4, (n=2). Pigeonite: Fs14.2±3.1Wo8.7±1.5 (n=10. δ17O = 2.71 permil, δ18O = 7.5 permil, Δ17O = -1.20 permil.
