Northwest Africa 12209 (NWA 12209)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2013 Feb

Classification: Ureilite

Physical characteristics: Small, triangular, dark-brown stone with desert varnished surface. Minor caliche. Sample includes polished thin section and billet.

Petrography: Predominantly olivine with significant reduction rims. Graphite occurs along grain boundaries as well as in clots interstitial to the mineral grains. Modal abundances: olivine approx. 90%; 5% graphite; remainder is scattered low-Ca pyroxene grains.

Geochemistry: Olivine: Fa16.3±4.6 (n=7); Olivine core: Fa19.6±2.3 (n=4); Olivine rim: Fa11.8±1.6 (n=3). Augite: Fs4.5±2.3Wo30.0±8.4, (n=2). Pigeonite: Fs14.3±6.6Wo5.3±2.4 (n=16). δ17O = 3.402 permil, δ18O = 8.206 permil, Δ17O = -0.877 permil.
