Northwest Africa 12396 (NWA 12396)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2015

Classification: Mesosiderite

Physical characteristics: 2.5 × 1.5 × 2.0 cm in size. Sample is irregular in shape with preserved fusion crust.

Petrography: Composed mainly of Opx and Plg. Opx ranges from 30 to 1480 μm. Plg ranges in size from 30 to 170 μm. FeNi metal ranges from 15 to 1050 μm and sulfides from 30 μm to 350 μm. Opaques comprise approximately 20% of sample. Weakly shocked: plagioclase displays minor undulose extinction and no melt veins or melt pockets are visible. Moderately weathered: Fe Oxide veining common.

Geochemistry: Low Ca pyroxene: Fs30.2±0.3Wo3.0±0.6, FeO/MnO=27.7±0.8 n=48; feldspar: An91.3±2.1Ab8.4±2.0 n=13. Oxygen isotopes (Ziegler, UNM): δ17O = 1.689±0.23, δ18O = 3.745±0.42, Δ17O = -0.289±0.01 per mil (n=3)
