Northwest Africa 12397 (NWA 12397)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2014

Classification: Mesosiderite

Physical characteristics: 3 × 2 × 2.5 cm in size. A well rounded sample with red brown staining and visible surface weathering.

Petrography: Composed mainly of Opx and Plg. Opx ranges from few μm to 2740 μm. Plg ranges from few μm to 160 μm. FeNi metal ranges from 50 μm to 1480 μm and sulfides from 10 μm to 1070 μm. Opaques comprise approximately 20% of sample. Weakly Shocked: plagioclase displays minor undulose extinction and no melt veins or melt pockets are visible. Moderately weathered: pervasive Fe Oxide veining, some oxidation of metal and sulfides.
