Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12425 (NWA 12425)

Algeria

Find: 2014 Jul

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated)

History: Found by a shepherd in July 2014 near Oum el Assel, Algeria, and subsequently acquired by David Lehman in September 2018 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Fresh unbrecciated specimen with microgabbroic texture composed of predominantly exsolved pigeonite and maskelynite with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite, chromite, merrillite, troilite and Ni-free metal. Small patches and thin cross-cutting veinlets of dark shock glass are present. Most exsolved pigeonite consists of orthopyroxene host with clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae, but also present are grains composed of clinopyroxene host with orthopyroxene exsolution lamellae.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene host (Fs60.7-61.3Wo2.2-1.8, FeO/MnO = 31, N = 2), clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae (Fs26.3-29.8Wo43.8-39.8, FeO/MnO =29-30, N = 2), maskelynite (An89.9-90.0Or0.6-0.5, N = 2).

Classification: Eucrite (unbrecciated, microgabbroic, maskelynite-bearing).

Specimens: 25.1 g including one polished thin section at PSF; remainder with Mr. D. Lehman.
