Northwest Africa 12470 (NWA 12470)

Purchased: 2018 March

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-5)

Physical characteristics: Single stone partly covered by fusion crust. Cut surface reveals dark interior with small chondrules and abundant matrix.

Petrography: Brecciated chondrite with small chondrules (average apparent diameter about 300 μm) set in an abundant recrystallized matrix with plagioclase size about 20 μm. Unequilibrated clasts present. Sulfides are the dominant opaque mineral. Magnetite is present.

Geochemistry: Type 5 host lithology Fa_39.3, NiO 0.23 wt% (n=2). Plagioclase An_15.2Ab_81.7Or_3.1(n=1). Unequilibrated clasts Fa_19.7±15.1, Fa PMD=71%, Cr₂O₃ 0.09±0.09 wt% (n=4).
