Antofagasta, Chile

Find: 2009 Dec 13

Classification: Mesosiderite

Physical characteristics: Dark brown stone. Cut surface reveals abundant metal.

Petrography: Crystalline rock with plagioclase and pyroxene with typical grain size 200 µm. Metal is abundant. Ilmenite, chromite and silica polymorph are present.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene Fs38.6±0.4Wo3.8±1.8, FeO/MnO 25.0±1.8 (n=6). Plagiocalse An93.3Ab6.5Or0.2 (n=2).

Classification: Mesosiderite
