Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4)

History: One piece of the sample (374 g) was retrieved from a reported fall site and collected by an officer of GSI, Central Region, Nagpur. According to the local villagers, a small depression or pit was made on the ground where the meteorite fell (Survey of India Toposheet No. 64D/15). The specimen was handed over to the GSI officer by the Tahsilder of Bhanupratappur on 7 July 2006.

Physical characteristics: The meteorite sample (size ~5.5 × 8 × 5 cm) is mostly covered with fusion crust (thickness ~ 1 mm). The sample is rectangular. In hand specimen, few chondrules are visible by naked eyes. Several anastomosing opaque melt veins are observed.

Petrography: This meteorite is composed of olivine + orthopyroxene (Opx >> Cpx) + clinopyroxene + feldspathic glass + Fe-Ni metals (kamacite and taenite) + troilite. The chondrules are composed of olivine and orthopyroxene, with the interstitial spaces (mesostasis) occupied by feldspathic glass. The size of chondrules varies from 300 - 1000 μm (diameter). Types of chondrules include Porphyritic Olivine (PO), Granular Pyroxene (GP), Porphyritic Pyroxene (PP), Porphyritic Olivine Pyroxene (POP), and Granular Olivine (GO), but chondrule margins are not well defined. Chondrules are fragmented in places. Matrix is relatively fine grained and thoroughly recrystallized. Troilite and kamacite form an intergrowth like texture, in which kamacite blebs and droplets are dessiminated throughout the troilite grain. Fragments of olivine and orthopyroxene are enclosed within opaque melt veins (length >> width; maximum width of the vein ~ 2 mm). Numerous metal (Fe-Ni) droplets (micron to submicrometer scale) are confined within these melt veins / veinlets.

Geochemistry: The mineral chemical data of different textural variants of olivine is Fa25-29Fo71-75; clinoenstatite, En72-77.5Fs20.6-26.3Wo1-4; clinopyroxene (diopside), Wo42.7-48.3En44.5-47Fs7-12; and feldspathic glass (albite to anorthoclase), Ab67.8-85An10.4-14.8Or4.3-17.4.

Classification: Different textural variants of olivine and orthopyroxene show near consistent mineral chemical compositional range (XMg) suggesting Bhanupratappur is an equilibrated ordinary chondrite (L4) having shock stage ~S4-S5.

Specimens: The specimen was officially submitted to the National Meteorite Repository (NMR), GSI, Kolkata on 1 May 2007 by the officer, GSI, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.
