Northwest Africa 12535 (NWA 12535)

Purchased: May 2018

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: Purchased by Su Lei from a Moroccan dealer during the China (Hunan) International Mineral & Gem Expo (CMGE) in Chenzhou, China.

Physical characteristics: Single stone, sand blasted exterior. Saw-cut surfaces show numerous large chondrules and scattered CAIs set in a dark brown matrix. Many chondrules have a reddish color.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows primarily type I chondrules, fine-grained matrix makes up approximately 50% of this meteorite.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee UNM) Olivine Fa5.9±5.0, Fe/Mn=88±81, Cr2O3=0.13±0.06 (wt%), n=20. low-Ca pyroxene Fs3.1±2.7Wo1.6±1.2, n=8; aluminous diopside Fs1.1±0.0Wo38.1±5.6, Al2O3=5.3±3.7 (wt%), n=2.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite CV3

Specimens: 22 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Mendy Ouzillou holds 91.5 g, Su Lei holds the main mass.
