Northwest Africa 12537 (NWA 12537)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018 Jul

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in July 2018 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Breccia composed of closely-packed eucrite clasts in a very sparse matrix (~2 vol.%). The clasts exhibit two very different textures: fine-grained ophitic and very fine-grained granulitic with larger pyroxene and plagioclase relics. Minerals are unexsolved pigeonite (of the same color in both lithologies), anorthite, silica polymorph, ilmenite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Pigeonite (Fs51.4-53.0Wo14.0-11.0, FeO/MnO = 32-35, N = 3), anorthite (An90.6-90.8Or0.4, N = 2).

Classification: Eucrite (genomict breccia).

Specimens: 7.3 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
