Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12277 (NWA 12277)

Algeria

Purchased: 2016 5

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, unbrecciated)

History: Purchased by Miao Bing-an in 2016 from Morocco.

Physical characteristics: The surface of the unbrecciated hand specimen is covered with almost complete black fusion crust. Additionally, this meteorite has weak magnetic properties (i.e., a magnet is weakly attracted to the meteorite) and dense structure.

Petrography (B. Miao, Chuantong Zhang, GUT): The structure is dense and there are abundant small Fe metal grains. Minerals are slightly broken, but the structure is igneous and not brecciated. Many minerals such as Low-Ca pyroxene, high-Ca pyroxene, plagioclase, SiO2, metal-Fe, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, zircon, rutile and baddeleyite were observed in this meteorite.

Geochemistry (B. Miao, C. Zhang, GUT, EPMA): Low-Ca pyroxene (n=13): Fe/Mn=29.1±1.4, Mg#=37.7±0.7;Fs59.8±1.6Wo3.9±1.8En36.3±0.7. High-Ca pyroxene (n=12): Fe/Mn=29.2±2.5, Mg#=50.7±1.5; Fs29.0±1.3Wo41.2±1.0En29.8±0.5. Plagioclase (n=20): An90.1±0.6Or0.4±0.2Ab9.5±0.6.

Classification: Based on texture and mineral composition, this meteorite is a basaltic unbrecciated eucrite.

Specimens: 31.8 g specimen and a polished thin section are deposited in GUT
