Northwest Africa 12345 (NWA 12345)

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

Physical characteristics: Stone has a dark fusion crust covered in reddish-orange weathering. It contains dark-gray to green angular clasts of varying size (0.1 mm to 4 mm in size) within a gray fine-grained matrix.

Petrography: (L. Jenkins UWO) This meteorite is a polymict breccia containing clasts of various lithologies and up to 4 mm in size (making up together about 20 vol% of the meteorite). Fine-grained to medium-grained clasts contain principally clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and silica (40% of clasts), others include orthopyroxene and olivine, with granoblastic or ophitic textures (60% of clasts). Matrix contains orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene with exsolution lamellae, plagioclase, and opaques (chromite, ilmenite, sulfides, and metal).

Geochemistry: (EPMA, M. Beauchamp, UWO): Eucrite host: low-Ca pyroxene Fs54.0±3.8Wo4.9±2.6, Fe/Mn=25.6±1.3 (n=6); augite Fs28.2±1.0Wo39.6±0.7, Fe/Mn=28.9±3.3 (n=4); and plagioclase An90.2±2.4 (n=10). Diogenite clasts: Olivine Fa43.7±0.1, Fe/Mn=47.7±1.3 (n=6); low-Ca pyroxenes Fs26.2±2.9Wo4.2±6.4, Fe/Mn=29.2±1.7 (n=10).

Classification: Achondrite (Howardite).

Specimens: 21.3 g including a thin section at UWO. S. Tutorow holds the main mass.
