Northwest Africa 12550 (NWA 12550) Morocco Purchased: 2019 Jan Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: Purchased in Essaouira in January 2019 Physical characteristics: Single stone, 70% covered by fusion crust. Cut surface reveals a fine grained dark green interior. Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Crystalline rock with doleritic texture. Pyroxenes (typical size 200 μm, strongly zoned) are set in maskelynite (150 μm). Other minerals: Fe sulfide, ilmenite (30 μm). Geochemistry: Pyroxene Fs39.3±11.3Wo18.8±6.2, range Fs28.2-63.1, Fe/Mn=33.5±2.3 (n=11). Maskelynite An52.2±0.9Ab46.5±0.7Or1.3±0.2 (n=3). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.46. Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. 0.73 g at ULB. Main mass with Kuntz. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
