Northwest Africa 12641 (NWA 12641)

Purchased: 2018 Oct

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK4)

History: Purchased in Temara, Morocco, by Adam Aaronson in October 2018.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Separated, well-defined, Cr-magnetite-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 760±270 µm, N = 25) occur in a relatively coarse-grained matrix containing magnetite (partially altered to secondary Fe hydroxides, khaki brown in thin section) and sparse small, fine-grained CAI.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.9±0.3 (range Fa24.6-25.2), N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs21.8±5.5Wo0.9±0.6 (range Fs13.9-26.4Wo1.7-0.4), N = 4), Al2O3 = 1.0-4.0 wt.%), subcalcic augite (Fs13.3Wo28.3), augite (Fs8.6Wo45.7).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK4).

Specimens: 25 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Aaronson.
