Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12645 (NWA 12645)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019 Feb

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: Purchased in February 2019 by Darryl Pitt from a Mauritanian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Very fresh specimen containing sparse lithic clasts of diabasic eucrite, but made up predominantly of related crystalline debris. Major phases are unexsolved pigeonite and maskelynite together with accessory silica polymorph, fayalite, orthopyroxene, ferroan subcalcic augite, chlorapatite, ilmenite and troilite. Grains of pyroxene and maskelynite in the lithic clasts and those occurring as disaggregated debris exhibit a prominent preferred orientation.

Geochemistry: Pigeonite (Fs46.5-50.8Wo12.4-14.3, FeO/MnO = 28-30, N = 2), ferroan subcalcic augite (Fs62.7Wo26.0, FeO/MnO = 35), orthopyroxene (Fs36.3Wo4.4; Fs42.7Wo0.8; FeO/MnO = 30; N = 2), fayalite (Fa75.6-78.5, FeO/MnO = 43), maskelynite (An86.9-89.9Or0.5-0.4, N = 2).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia with laminar fabric, maskelynite-bearing).

Specimens: 24 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with DPitt.
