Northwest Africa 11987 (NWA 11987)

Purchased: 2005

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: Purchased by an anonymous collector from a dealer at the Munich Show in 2005, subsequently acquired by the Hollis Collection and then donated to PSF.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Fairly closely packed, well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 705±260 μm, N=20) are set in a finer-grained matrix containing stained metal.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa29.8±15.5 (range Fa1.1-58.4), Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.04-0.27 wt.%, mean 0.11±0.08 wt.%, N = 7. Low-Ca pyroxene Fs11.6±11.8Wo0.3±0.1 (range Fs3.2-19.9Wo0.2-0.3), N = 2; Fs54.8Wo1.5. High-Ca pyroxene Fs18.2Wo36.1. Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.63.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3).
