Northwest Africa 12521 (NWA 12521)

Purchased: 2018 Nov

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3.1)

History: Purchased by Ben Hoefnagels in November 2018 from a dealer in Agadir, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Very fresh specimen composed of well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 860±430 µm, N = 24, excluding one large 5 mm chondrule in the studied thin section) plus some angular Type 3 lithic clasts (up to 1.6 mm across) set in a fine grained, metal-bearing matrix (~10 vol.%, black in thin section).

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa17.2±12.3 (n=8, randomly selected), range Fa1.7-59.4. Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.03-1.30 wt.%, mean 0.22±0.24 wt.%, N = 30), orthopyroxene (Fs1.5-33.2Wo0.3-1.0, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs26.8Wo14.9), augite (Fs17.1Wo35.8). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.64.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3.1). Based on lack of equilibration of mafic silicates, chondrule sizes and magnetic susceptibility this specimen is an L3 chondrite, and the distribution of Cr in ferroan olivines is consistent with an L3.1 chondrite (similar to Adrar 003, as documented by Grossman and Brearley, 2005).

Specimens: 20.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. B. Hoefnagels.
