Northwest Africa 12685 (NWA 12685)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2017

Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Thirty dark brownish individuals partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia with well defined chondrules (apparent mean diamter 400 μm) set into abundant matrix dominated by Fe-rich olivine. Compositionally unequilibrated olivine and pyroxene occur in chondrules and as single mineral fragments. More minor phases include Ca-pyroxene, sodic plagioclase, sulfides, and Ti-bearing chromite; no metal was detected. The meteorite contains recrystallized melt clasts.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa25.7±12.1 (Fa9.1-38.2, n=32); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs17.9±10.5Wo1.0±0.8 (Fs0.5-29.6Wo0.3-3.5, n=21); Ca-pyroxene: Fs11.4±1.0Wo44.2±1.0 (Fs9.7-12.9Wo41.9-45.7, n=11)
