Northwest Africa 12686 (NWA 12686)

Purchased: 2016

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single stone partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia with fine-grained basaltic clasts (average mineral grain sizes about 80 μm) set into a coarse-grained basaltic matrix (average mineral grain sizes about 400 μm). Dominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, ilmenite, chromite, troilite, and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs62.9±1.0Wo4.3±1.2 (Fs61.2-64.2Wo2.8-6.0, n=12, FeO/MnO=27-30); Ca-pyroxene: Fs33.2±3.0Wo38.6±3.3 (Fs29.8-37.5Wo33.6-42.3, n=10, FeO/MnO=29-35); calcic plagioclase: An79.6±4.1 (An72.2-84.2, n=15)
