Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12698 (NWA 12698)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: Found in the Arg-Shash region located at the Mauritanian-Algerian border by desert nomads in spring 2018.

Physical characteristics: Single stone, ~90% fusion encrusted trapezoidal-shaped stone; saw cut reveals numerous chondrules up to 2 mm in diameter and scattered CAIs. Dark, gray-colored groundmass makes up about 30% of this meteorite; ubiquitous opaques visible.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination showed many porphyritic chondrules most of which were type I. Many chondrules are metal-rich; often decorated or mantled with metal. Abundant fine grained, hydrous matrix throughout. Aluminous diopside detected.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Forsterite Fa2.4±2.3, Fe/Mn=27±19, Cr2O3=0.29±0.12 wt%, n=12; enstatite Fs1.7±1.3Wo1.7±1.2, Fe/Mn=12±10, n=12.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2), possibly paired with NWA 12197.

Specimens: 20.1 g on deposit at UNM, DPitt holds the main mass.
