Northwest Africa 12730 (NWA 12730)

Algeria

Find: 2017

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: Bought by Zaid Sbiti in 2017, then bought from Mohamed Elguirah in October 2018

Physical characteristics: Full stone with remants of fusion crust

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Stony-iron meteorite with silicate grain size 500 µm (pyroxene plagioclase) and abundant metal with grain size several mm. Accessory minerals include chromite, silica polymorph (to 50 µm), troilite.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene Fs32.5±0.3Wo3.7±0.8, FeO/MnO 23.4±1.8 (n=3). Plagioclase An92.5±1.2Ab7.4±1.1Or0.1±0.1 (n=3).

Classification: Mesosiderite.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Jean Redelsperger.
