Northwest Africa 12420 (NWA 12420)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2011 Feb

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: Puchased in Temara, Morocco, by Adam Aaronson in February 2011.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Aggregate of predominantly low-Ca pyroxene (orthopyroxene cores with slightly more calcic and more ferroan rims), calcic plagioclase and metal (about 50 vol%, kamacite with taenite) plus accessory chromite, Mg-merrillite, silica polymorph and troilite.

Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (Fs21.6-23.8Wo0.9-1.5, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene rim (Fs31.7Wo4.2, FeO/MnO = 26), plagioclase (An86.4-89.5Or0.7-0.5, N = 2).

Classification: Mesosiderite.

Specimens: 20.4 g including one polished endcut at UWB; remainder with Aaronson.
