Northwest Africa 12737 (NWA 12737)

Purchased: 2019 Mar

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5)

History: Purchased in Temara, Morocco, by Adam Aaronson in March 2019.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Very fresh specimen composed of some separated, well-formed chondrules in a recrystallized matrix containing Cr-magnetite (with rare inclusions of chlorapatite and ilmenite), intermediate plagioclase, pentlandite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa29.6±0.4 (range Fa29.0-29.9), N = 4), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs25.8±0.2Wo0.9±0.3 (range Fs25.6-25.9Wo1.1-0.7), N = 2), pigeonite (Fs22.0Wo13.0), augite (Fs11.3Wo41.6), plagioclase (An63.8Or0.7). Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): analyses of acid-washed subsamples by laser fluorination gave, respectively, δ17O -3.772, -4.218, -4.061; δ18O 0.935, 0.273, 0.431; Δ17O -4.266, -4.362, -4.289 per mil.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5).

Specimens: 21.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Aaronson.
