Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12748 (NWA 12748)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)

History: Two stones weighing 36 g were found in Morocco prior to 2019 and were purchased by John Sinclair and J. Donald Cline at the 2019 Tucson Gem and Mineral Show.

Physical characteristics: Sample is dark black in color, irregularly shaped, and has ~25% crust coating one side. Cut face of the sample shows small chondrules and CAIs set within a dark-colored matrix.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App): Sample is shows chondritic texture composed of chondrules, fragments, and CAIs (~42 vol %) distributed throughout a black fine-grained matrix (~58 vol%). Porphyritic chondrules have an average diameter of 330 µm with chemical zonation. Additional minerals are: pentlandite, calcite, tochilinite, pyrrhotite, kamacite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine: Type I chondrules Fa0.9±0.7 (Fa0.3-2.2), N=6; Type II chondrules Fa39.9±15.2 (Fa16.7-63.4), N=14 Low Ca-pyroxene: Fs2.3±1.7Wo1.4±1.1(Fs1.1-5.4Wo0.2-3.5, N=10).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CM2)/ Based on matrix abundance, chondrule size and mineralogy this is a CM2.

Specimens: PARI holds the main mass. One endcut weighing 9.3 g and a polished thin section are on deposit at App.
