Northwest Africa 12763 (NWA 12763)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2016 Dec

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: Purchased by Beat Booz in December 2016 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of microgabbroic eucrite clasts plus mineral clasts of related crystalline debris, both exhibiting some preferred dimensional orientation. Minerals are exsolved pigeonite (pale orange in thin section), calcic plagioclase (polycrystalline) together with accessory ilmenite, Ti-chromite, troilite and zircon. Minor secondary calcite is present.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs59.7-63.4Wo3.8-5.6, FeO/MnO = 28-33, N = 3), high-Ca pyroxene (Fs25.1-27.8Wo43.0-42.5, FeO/MnO = 30-34, N = 3), plagioclase (An92.1Or0.2).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia, microgabbroic, shocked)

Specimens: 21.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. B. Booz.
