Ouargla 003        31.466237°N, 5.325944°E

Ouargla, Algeria

Find: 2018

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Five matching fragments were purchased from the Moroccan dealer in 2019 totaling 68.40 g.

Physical characteristics: The meteorite has a greyish appearance without fusion crust.

Petrography: (A. Bischoff, IfP). The rock is coarse-grained and consists of up to mm-sized grains of pyroxene (intergrowth of low-Ca- and Ca-pyroxene; approximately 60 vol%) and interstitial maskelynite grains (~40 vol%). Plagioclase is completely transformed into maskelynite. Pyroxene is strongly fractured and has shock-induced mosaic extinction.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: (K. Klemm and S. Lentfort, IfP). Zoned low-Ca pyroxene is Fs39-62En22-44Wo11-17 (average: Fs52.1±7.0En33.8±7.2Wo14.1±1.5; n= 11). Ca-pyroxene is Fs26.0±5.0En42.3±4.8Wo31.7±1.3, on average (n=14). The pyroxenes have mean Fe/Mn = 35.0. Plagioclase is An51.2±4.7Ab47.1±4.8Or1.7±0.4 on average (n=9) and varies (An42-57Ab41-56Or0.4-2.3).

Classification: Martian (Shergottite)
