Northwest Africa 12700 (NWA 12700) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2019 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict) History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Guelmin, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Flat shaped single stone partly covered by fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia with fine- and coarse-grained basaltic and black melt clasts set into a clastic mineral matrix. Dominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase of highly variable grain sizes between 80 μm and 1 mm. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, and ilmenite. No metallic Fe has been found. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs59.8±0.5Wo2.2±0.2 (Fs58.9-60.6Wo1.8-2.8, n=11, FeO/MnO=29-31); Ca-pyroxene: Fs25.4±0.9Wo43.5±1.0 (Fs24.1-27.0Wo41.8-45.0, n=15, FeO/MnO=26-35); calcic plagioclase: An91.7±0.6 (An90.7-92.8, n=16) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
