Northwest Africa 12701 (NWA 12701) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2019 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict) History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Zagora, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Single stone lacking any fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia with up tp 7 mm sized basaltic and black melt clasts set into a clastic mineral matrix. Dominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase of highly variable grain sizes between 30 μm and 1 mm. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, and metallic Fe. Geochemistry: pyroxene host to augite lamellae: Fs66.1.0±1.9Wo3.3±0.6 (Fs60.4-67.5Wo3.0-4.7, n=12, FeO/MnO=31-34); Ca-pyroxene: Fs27.1±1.1Wo41.1±0.6 (Fs25.3-28.7Wo40.0-42.5, n=9, FeO/MnO=29-32); diogenitic pyroxene: Fs31.4±3.5Wo3.2±0.4 (Fs28.8-38.1Wo2.4-4.0, n=12, FeO/MnO=27-33); calcic plagioclase: An92.1±0.9 (An90.4-93.6, n=13) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
