Northwest Africa 12703 (NWA 12703)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Single stone with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia composed of rare black impact melt clasts set into a basaltic matrix dominated by exsolved pyroxene and often lath shaped calcic plagioclase with grain sizes of about 300 μm. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, fayalite, and metallic Fe.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs64.5±0.7Wo2.1±0.6 (Fs63.4-65.6Wo1.5-3.5, n=13, FeO/MnO=29-32); Ca-pyroxene: Fs36.7±1.3Wo36.5±1.4 (Fs34.3-39.1Wo34.2-38.6, n=13, FeO/MnO=29-35); calcic plagioclase: An83.6±2.4 (An78.9-87.3, n=16)
