Northwest Africa 12706 (NWA 12706)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Several small fragments ranging from 2.53 g to less than 0.1 g.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia with small up to 700 μm sized basaltic and black melt clasts set into a clastic mineral matrix. Dominant minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase of highly variable grain sizes between 10 and 400 μm. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, and fayalite. No metallic Fe has been found.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs56.0±2.8Wo3.2±0.8 (Fs52.9-59.4Wo2.3-4.2, n=11, FeO/MnO=30-35); Ca-pyroxene: Fs28.9±1.0Wo41.0±2.0 (Fs27.4-31.0Wo36.7-42.5, n=15, FeO/MnO=26-36); calcic plagioclase: An90.8±1.0 (An89.1-92.2, n=14)
