Writeup from MB 108:
Northwest Africa 12801 (NWA 12801) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2018 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Guelmim, Morocco. Physical characteristics: Two dark-grayish fragments without fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite displays a brownish interior and is composed of several well defined chondrules (mean diameter about 700 μm) set into abundant recrystallized matrix. Compositionally equilibrated Fe-rich olivine is the dominant mineral phase in the matrix. Olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are compositionally zoned in most chondrules. Minor phases include intermediate plagioclase, Ca-pyroxene, and troilite. Cr-rich magnetite is abundant; metal was not detected. The meteorite appears brecciated. Geochemistry: unequilibrated olivine: Fa20.9±4.4 (Fa15.0-25.5, n=11); unequilibrated low-Ca pyroxene: Fs14.9±7.8Wo0.4±0.1 (Fs3.8-23.3Wo0.3-0.5, n=14); Fe-rich matrix olivine: Fa29.5±0.9, FeO/MnO=115±13, n=13; low-Ca matrix pyroxene: Fs24.3±0.7Wo1.0±0.2, n=18; matrix Ca-pyroxene: Fs10.0±1.4Wo43.6±4.6, n=5; matrix feldspar: An25.7±7.5Ab69.3±6.3Or5.1±1.4, n=6 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
