Writeup from MB 108:
Northwest Africa 12822 (NWA 12822) Northwest Africa Purchased: 2019 Classification: Angrite History: Purchased by Habib Naji from a Moroccan meteorite hunter in Morocco, March 2019. Physical characteristics: Single stone of several fragments that fit together. Irregular shaped exterior, dark brown, lacking fusion crust. Broken surface reveals coarse grains, dark brown and light brown in color, many cleavage faces are visible. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows a protogranular texture of calcium-bearing olivine, titanoan aluminian augite, anorthite, and spinel. Approximately half of the kamacite in this meteorite has been altered to iron-oxide. Many fine veinlets of iron-oxide crosscut the primary minerals. Iron sulfide was also detected. Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa40.6±0.2, CaO=1.2±0.2 (wt%), Fe/Mn=84±22, n=7; titanoan aluminian augite Fs10.3±1.8Wo53.6±0.6, Al2O3=7.5±0.7, TiO2=1.3±0.1 (both wt%). Fe/Mn=84±2 n=7; anorthtite An99-96, n=3. Classification: Plutonic angrite, likely paired with NWA 2999 and NWA 3164. Specimens: 23 g plus a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Habib Naji holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
