Northwest Africa 12770 (NWA 12770) Morocco Purchased: January 2019 Classification: Iron meteorite (IIIAB) History: Six stones ranging from 53 g to 327 g, purchased from a dealer in Essaouria in January 2019. Physical characteristics: The six stones range in size from ~3 to 10 cm in longest dimension, and consist of a suite of irregularly shaoed masses with mottled brown and rusty red exterior surfaces. Petrography: (C. Herd, L. Tunney, and R. Bukatiuk, UAb) A 2 × 3 cm polished and etched slice shows a well-developed Widmanstatten pattern with average kamacite bandwidth of 0.9 ± 0.3 mm (n=11). No inclusions were observed. Geochemistry: (C. Herd and L. Tunney, UAb) ICP-MS data, using sample of North Chile (Filomena) as standard: Ni = 7.3, Co = 0.47 (both wt%); Ir = 12.2, Ga = 16.7, Ge = 27.2, As = 3.8, W = 1.0, Re = 1.2, Os = 2.6, Pt = 15.5, Cu = 169, Au <1.0 (all µg/g). Classification: Iron, IIIAB, medium octahedrite Specimens: Type specimen of 26.2 g at UAb. Main mass with Kuntz. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
