Northwest Africa 12871 (NWA 12871)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased in 2018 by Matthew Stream from Habib Naji Naji in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark-brown stone containing weathering cracks throughout the fusion crust into the interior.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Sample contains abundant well-formed, closely packed chondrules (up to 2.5 mm, av. diameter 950 µm) in a dark matrix of fine-grained silicates, troilite, iron oxides, and rare iron-nickel metal.

Geochemistry: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Olivine (Fa16.6±10.5, range Fa0.8-33.2, n=25), Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine (0.07-0.35 wt%, mean 0.21±0.10, n=12), Orthopyroxene (Fs9.5±6.2Wo1.9±1.7, range Fs2.4-21.0Wo0.2-4.3, n=20).
