Northwest Africa 12878 (NWA 12878)

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Errachidia, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Small dark greyish fragment with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia with fine- and coarse-grained basaltic clasts set into a clastic matrix predominantly composed of exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase of highly variable grain sizes. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, ilmenite, zircon, and some kamacite. The meteorite contains shock melt veins.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs61.8±0.4Wo2.2±0.5 (Fs60.8-62.2Wo1.8-3.4, FeO/MnO=32-37, n=12); Ca-pyroxene: Fs27.3±0.4Wo43.6±0.4 (Fs26.5-28.2Wo42.9-44.4, FeO/MnO=31-36, n=14); calcic plagioclase: An87.8±4.0 (An79.5-91.0, n=15)
