Writeup from MB 108:
Northwest Africa 12905 (NWA 12905) Algeria Purchased: 2019 Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite) History: Purchased by Matthew Stream in 2019 from a seller in Algeria. Physical characteristics: Minor fusion crust; a slice of the interior reveals a variety of light and dark clasts set in a fine-grained matrix. Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Fine-grained polymict breccia, <7 mm clast size for basaltic eucrite clasts, <3 mm for diogenite clasts, <2 mm for cumulate eucrite clasts. Modal content of howardite (in vol.%): diogenites, 30%; cumulate eucrites, 25%; basaltic eucrites, 40%; anorthosite clasts, 4%; opaques, 1%. Geochemistry: Eucrite pyroxene: pigeonite (Fs46.6Wo12.2), n=19; augite (Fs36.5Wo31.8), n=4; Fe/Mn=28. Diogenite pyroxene: orthopyroxene (Fs30.1Wo2.7), n=35; Fe/Mn=30. Calcic plagioclase (An90), N=13. Chromite and SiO2-rich glass present. Classification: Achondrite (Howardite). Likely paired with NWA 12227 due to both originating from the same source in Algeria. Specimens: 20.08 grams at UCLA; main mass with Matthew Stream. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
