Calama 031 22°08.90’S, 68°37.72’W Antofagasta, Chile Find: 23 Oct 2018 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) History: many pieces of the meteorite were found by Mr. M. Nepomiluev Physical characteristics: all samples of the meteorite have a brown fusion crust Petrography: M. A. Ivanova (Vernad) The meteorite consists of chondrules, their fragments, and a fine grained matrix. Chondrules, mostly porphyritic and barred, are up to 0.23 mm in size. Olivine and pyroxene in chondrules are embedded in glassy mesostasis. CAIs containing spinel, hibonite and melilite occur in the matrix. Small blebbs of Fe,Ni-metal and sulfide grains occur in the matrix. Shock stage is S2, based on undulatory extinction of olivine grains, weathering grade is low. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: M. A. Ivanova (Vernad) Olivine: Fa0.63-75.3 (N=56), orthopyroxene: Fs0.8-45.8Wo0.63-4.4 (N=23), Ca-pyroxene: Fs1.4-25.1Wo19.3-46.7 (N=11). Oxygen isotopic compositions: (OU) δ17O=-4.126, -4.44; δ18O=-0.544, -0.874; Δ17O= -3.843, -3.986 (all ‰). Classification: based on the texture, chondrule sizes, mineral chemistry and bulk oxygen isotopic composition, the meteorite belongs to type CO3. Specimens: several pieces of the meteorite (165 g total), and 1 polished thin sections are deposited in Vernad. Mt. M. Nepomiluev ([email protected]) hold the main mass of the meteorite. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
