Northwest Africa 12916 (NWA 12916) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2019 Mar Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped) Physical characteristics: A single brownish mass. Cut surface reveals fresh metallic interior. Petrography: Etching of a polished section reveals a finely recrystalized coarse octahedrite structure with grain size about 10 µm. Remnants of swathing kamacite bands are visible. Geochemistry: (J.T. Wasson, UCLA): INAA data, Ni = 108, Co = 5.19 (both mg/g), Cu = 45, Ga = 4.8, As = 2.57, W= 1.63, Re = 844, Ir = 6.95, Pt = 13.55, Au = 0.48 (all µg/g). Classification: Iron, ungrouped. Ungrouped designation based on composition; no close compositional relatives among 105 other ungrouped irons. Specimens: Type specimen (55 g) at CEREGE.
