Northwest Africa 12961 (NWA 12961)

Morocco

Purchased: 2019 Mar

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L7)

Physical characteristics: Single stone without fusion crust

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Highly recrystallized rock with no relict chondrules visible in the studied section. Plagioclase has K-rich rims. Opaque minerals are metal and troilite. Abundant vesicles with typical size 250 µm.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa23.0±0.1 (n=3). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs18.8±0.3Wo4.4±0.0 (n=3). Plagioclase An2.8±1.3Ab86.6±4.8Or10.6±6.0 (n=2) with K-rich rims An2.3Ab52.8Or44.9 (n=1).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L7). Type 7 from texture, Wo content of low-Ca pyroxene, and presence of K-rich rims in plagioclase.

Specimens: Type specimen and a polished section at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz.
