Northwest Africa 12949 (NWA 12949) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2019 May Classification: Mesosiderite History: Purchased in May 2019 by Craig Zlimen, Thomas Thiegs and Dr. Peter March from a dealer in Goulmima, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Aggregate (mean grainsize ~0.4 mm) of orthopyroxene, pigeonite, anorthite and ~ 40 vol.% metal (kamacite+taenite) with accessory augite, silica polymorph, Ti-chromite and troilite. Geochemistry: Orthopyroxene (F18.0-23.5Wo1.2-3.2, FeO/MnO = 28-33, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs38.3-57.5Wo4.4-7.0, FeO/MnO = 24-30, N = 4), augite (Fs31.9-50.6Wo39.0-42.1, FeO/MnO = 33-36, N = 2), plagioclase (An90.5Or0.3), kamacite (Ni = 4.9 wt.%), taenite (Ni = 26.5 wt.%). Classification: Mesosiderite. Specimens: 60.2 g in the form of a polished endcut at UWB; remainder held jointly by C. Zlimen, T. Thiegs and Dr. P. March. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
