Northwest Africa 12959 (NWA 12959)

Algeria

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: Purchased in Morocco in 2019.

Physical characteristics: Dark stone. Cut face reveals a dark interior with chondrules and CAIs.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrules (average apparent diameter 890±270 µm, n=15) and CAIs set in a iron-rich fine-grained matrix. Opaques are sulfides and magnetite.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa9.2±4.2 (n=4). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs3.4±1.8Wo2.4±1.0 (n=4). Matrix microprobe over an area of 30 × 30 µm: total 100.0%, FeO 39.9 wt% (n=1).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3).

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Isabelle Pothier.
