Northwest Africa 12632 (NWA 12632)

Purchased: 2019 Feb

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased in February 2019 by Darryl Pitt from a Mauritanian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Coarse grained gabbroic specimen (mean grain size ~3 mm) composed predominantly of zoned clinopyroxene and maskelynite with accessory merrillite, chlorapatite, ulvöspinel, ilmenite, pyrrhotite and symplectitic intergrowths of fayalite+hedenbergite+silica polymorph. Very minor secondary calcite is present.

Geochemistry: Subcalcic augite (Fs29.3Wo28.2 and Fs34.0Wo25.7, FeO/MnO = 30 and 31, N = 2), ferropigeonite (Fs74.1±5.9Wo17.2±3.2, range Fs68.0-82.1Wo20.0-12.8, FeO/MnO = 40 to 42, N = 4), maskelynite (An 46.3-56.4Or2.2-0.7, N = 2).

Classification: Shergottite (gabbroic).

Specimens: 13.3 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with DPitt.
