Northwest Africa 12925 (NWA 12925) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2018 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK5) History: Purchased Dec. 2018 by Dustin Dickens in Morocco from anonymous dealer. Physical characteristics: Dark, fusion crusted exterior, saw cut and broken surfaces reveal a very dark gray interior, some scattered CAIs visible, a few large (>1mm) chondrules are present. Friable. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite consists numerous texturally equilibrated chondrules, ubiquitous Cr-bearing magnetite and pentlandite. Olivine is nickel-bearing. Matrix appears to be recrystallized with some fine-grained plagioclase. Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa30±0.8, Fe/Mn=102±8, NiO=0.48±0.05 (wt%), n=20; low-Ca pyroxene Fs26.8±0.9Wo1.2±1.3, Fe/Mn=68±7, n=6; clinopyroxene Fs13.8±4.4Wo34.9±11.9, Fe/Mn=58±7, n=6. Oxygen isotopes (K. Ziegler, UNM): 3 acid-washed fragments analyzed by laser fluorination gave δ18O= 1.584, 1.005, 1.067; δ17O= -3.141,-3.415, -3.581; Δ17O= 3.242, 2.808, 2.958 (linearized, all per mil, TFL slope=0.528). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite CK5. Specimens: 20.5 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Dustin Dickens holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
