Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12993 (NWA 12993)

(Northwest Africa)

Find: 2016

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6)

Petrography: Chondrules are dominantly porphyritic with typical size of 250-400 µm, with one notable large chondrule observed at >2 mm. Few exhibit discernible edges but most are poorly delineated and chondrule fragments blend in with the recrystallized matrix. Metal grains (~ 4 vol%) have lengths up to 1.2 mm. Sulfides have a ~4 vol% abundance. Plagioclase is mostly 50-200 µm in length.

Geochemistry: Mineral composition and geochemistry: Metal: predominantly kamacite with 6.1±1.2 wt% Ni and 0.8 ±0.1 wt% Co, taenite with 16.3-46.5 wt% Ni and 0.5±0.2 wt% Co. Troilite and chromite analyses had low totals due to weathering. Olivine: Fa25.1±1.2 (N=28). Pyroxene: Fs20.7±1.2En77.6±1.4Wo1.7±0.4 (N=24). Plagioclase: Ab83.9±0.4An10.3±0.3Or5.8±0.5 (N=15)
