Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12847 (NWA 12847)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: Mar 2017

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: Collected by nomads in Western Sahara and purchased by Romano Serra at the Bologna Mineral Show in 2017 from a Moroccan dealer.

Physical characteristics: A single small piece without fusion crust. CAIs are visible on the cut surface.

Petrography: (V. Moggi Cecchi, G. Pratesi, UniFi); The thin section displays a chondritic texture, with PO, POP and BO chondrules ranging from 750 to 1300 μm in a fine grained matrix. PO and POP chondrules display zoned, Mg-rich olivine crystals and elongated pyroxene grains. Orthopyroxene in chondrules is rather homogeneous. Iron oxides are prevailing among opaque phases; Fe-Ni alloys and troilite can alse be observed as individual grains in the matrix or rimming chondrules.

Geochemistry: EMP (V. Moggi Cecchi, G. Pratesi, UniFi); Olivine in PO chondrules cores (Fa1.1±1.0Fo98.9±1.0; Fe/Mn = 6.8, n=12 ); Olivine in matrix (Fa32.5±3.4Fo68.5±3.4; Fe/Mn = 63.5, n=11 ); Orthopyroxene in chondrules and in matrix (Fs1.1±0.1En97.5±0.6Wo1.4±0.2, Fe/Mn = 18.6, n=11).

Classification: Carbonaceous Chondrite (CV3); S1; W2

Specimens: A total of 3.2 g specimen is on deposit at MSN-FI. OAM holds the main mass.
