Writeup from MB 108:
Northwest Africa 12956 (NWA 12956) Mauritania Find: 2017 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict) History: Purchased in 2017 by V. Oullet from a seller in Mauritania. Physical characteristics: Single stone with almost absent fusion crust. A slice of the interior reveals an assortment of light and dark clasts. Petrography: (D. Sheikh, FSU) Sample is a breccia composed predominantly of cumulate and basaltic eucritic clasts (>4 mm) set in a dark fine-grained matrix. Some diogenitic clasts are present as well (<10% volume). Minerals present include orthopyroxene, pigeonite, augite, calcic plagioclase, ilmenite, and troilite. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs41.4±9.6 Wo4.1±2.4, Fe/Mn=32, n=63), diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs25.7±2.4Wo1.8±0.7, Fe/Mn=28, n=14), high-Ca pyroxene (Fs25.8±2.4Wo40.5±3.5, Fe/Mn=29, n=7), calcic plagioclase (An90.5±1.9Or0.3±0.1, n=15), ilmenite (Fe/(Fe+Mg)=95, n=2). Classification: Eucrite (polymict breccia) Specimens: 20.03 grams at UCLA; main mass with V. Oullet. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
