Northwest Africa 12968 (NWA 12968) Mauritania Purchased: 2019 Jul Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated) History: Purportedly found in Mauritania and purchased by Jason Phillips in July 2019 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of mineral clasts of exsolved pigeonite, calcic plagioclase, pigeonite and subcalcic augite together with accessory silica polymorph in a finer grained matrix containing ilmenite (with marginal zircon blebs), troilite and secondary barite. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene host (Fs59.4-61.1Wo2.3-1.6, FeO/MnO = 33-36, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs35.6-44.1Wo9.0-10.1, FeO/MnO = 29-34, N = 2), orthopyroxene rim on pigeonite (Fs59.5Wo1.9, FeO/MnO = 33), subcalcic augite (Fs39.7-44.2Wo27.7-22.3, FeO/MnO =33, N = 2), plagioclase (An85.1Or0.5). Classification: Eucrite (breccia). Specimens: 20.2 g including one thin section and one polished endcut at UWB; remainder held Mr. J. Phillips. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
