Northwest Africa

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased from Morocco May 2019.

Physical characteristics: Five identical appearing pieces. No fusion crust, desert weathered exteriors. Saw cuts reveal fine-grained pyroxene grains and shiny maskelynite. Numerous black shock melt pockets present.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) EPMA images show ~60% igneous-zoned pyroxene and 35% maskelynite. Ubiquitous Ti-magnetite, ilmenite, sulfide, and shock melt observed.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Pigeonite Fs57.7±2.8Wo15.1±3.2, Fe/Mn=37±1, n=6; augite Fs27.8±9.8Wo33.0±2.5, Fe/Mn=30±3, n=6; plagioclase An49.3±3.5, Ab49.3±3.1, Or 1.5±0.5, n=6; shock melt (proxy for bulk composition) SiO2=48.4, TiO2=1.3, Al2O3=7.2, MgO=7.0, FeO=21.0, MnO=0.55, CaO=9.9, Na2O=1.4, K2O=0.17 (wt%), n=4.

Classification: Martian basaltic shergottite.

Specimens: 11 g on deposit at UNM, Larry Atkins holds the main mass.
