Northwest Africa 13313 (NWA 13313)

Mali

Purchased: 2019 Apr

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3-6)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in April 2019 from dealer in Timbuktu, Mali.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed, fairly closely packed, relatively unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 830±450 µm, N = 23), plus some equilibrated Type 6 clasts containing sparse chondrules, are set in a finer grained matrix containing kamacite, taenite, Ti-chromite, chlorapatite, merrillite and troilite. A large fine grained, igneous-textured clast (1.9 cm across) is composed of reversely zoned olivine microphenocrysts plus extremely fine grained interstitial quench products (with Ca pyroxene-like bulk composition).

Geochemistry: Olivine in chondrules (Fa25.6±5.6, range Fa22.7-36.9, Cr2O3 < 0.03 wt.%, N = 6), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs21.6±3.1Wo1.3±0.1, range Fs19.9-26.2Wo1.2-1.4, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs6.0Wo36.3), augite (Fs6.9±0.1Wo45.8±0.5, range Fs6.8-7.0Wo46.1-45.4, N = 2), olivine in Type 5 clast (Fa25.1), olivine in fine grained igneous clast (core Fa23.0, rims 11.1-16.6; N = 3). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.79.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3-6 breccia).

Specimens: 29.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
