Writeup from MB 109:
Northwest Africa 13362 (NWA 13362) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: January 2020 Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: Purchased in January 2020 by Jasper Spencer from a moroccan dealer. Physical characteristics: One stone covered by a dull, dark-colored fusion crust. Petrography: (Daniel Sheikh, FSU) Sample is predominantly composed of slightly oriented maskelynite laths (Av. 900±50 µm, up to 3 mm, 65 vol%) and complexly zoned, tabular, rounded, and irregularly-shaped grains (some twinned) of ferropigeonite and subcalcic augite (Av. 350±50 µm, up to 1mm, 35 vol%). Accessory phases include titanomagnetite, ulvöspinel, Si-Al-K-Na rich glass, merrillite, chlorapatite, and pyrrhotite. Sample contains minor carbonate weathering veins. Geochemistry: Ferropigeonite (Fs66.4±12.6Wo16.4±3.2, range Fs42.3-85.2Wo9.2-21.9, FeO/MnO=38±5, n=41), subcalcic augite (Fs41.1±10.1Wo30.1±3.0, range Fs24.0-54.0Wo26.4-36.6, FeO/MnO=34±5, n=14), maskelynite (An47.9±4.4Or2.0±0.9, range An39.6-53.5Or1.0-4.2, n=28). Classification: Martian (shergottite) Silicate chemistry, the presence of maskelynite, and FeO/MnO ratios of pyroxenes provide support for classification as shergottite. Specimens: 1 gram at App; main mass with Jasper Spencer. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
